There is a difference between" common law marriage and cohabitation. In some cases, if you have a life partner, you can as an individual and in some cases, if you are married "common law" you are married, as if you it has the traditional manner.

The difference between cohabitation and common law marriage is of vital importance. If you have a life partner who can legally only if you are married common law, you are legally married to the same extent as if you have a ceremony. So how do you know if you are married in the eyes of the law? Common law marriages are only in some states, including the District of Columbia, Alabama, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Iceland, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

In order to create the conditions for a common law marriage, you and your partner in the rule must be either in writing or orally to a man / woman relationship, keep as a man and woman and acquire a reputation as a married couple. The length of time you have cohabitated can play a role in determining the "common law" marriage. Common law marriages typically are limited to heterosexual couples.
If you and your partner live in one of the states recognize that the common law marriage and do not want the government to consider how you married, you may contact a lawyer and create a document that would be your relationship than unmarried cohabitee.
