news came on July 16 that inflation has jumped more than one percent in a month, the fastest single monthly increase since decades. Sells gasoline at four dollars per gallon. The home-mortgage market crisis continued to play. Airlines and automobile manufacturers reported steep losses. 400,000 jobs lost so far this year. Credit tightening.

None of these developments will be to destroy the United States or the economy. In fact, there are many more bad news to worry about: Massive flooding this spring, the state of California is on fire, the corn harvest will be late and less than expected. Also, as Mark Twain might say, a president is elected and then Congress. None of these things will destroy us. The sky is not falling.

Stress Management believes that events and situations in which people react with fear. Fear is made up of a cognitive component (anxiety) and visceral component (blood pressure rises, adrenaline flows, emotions run high). The manager and the head of a company must resist the urge to panic, to be overly pessimistic to behave as if he or she were helpless, or wait until "someone else" to do something. Leaders are not paid for nothing to do. They earn their keep when the chips down. At the moment the chips are down.

Flexibility can make the difference. Only adherence to which, as it's always been done amounts to produce a helpless position, given the problems that you and your employees. Flexibility is not to be confused with fantasy. All the flexibility is the willingness to consider a different approach. Imagination care only about the people you lead. They make suggestions which would help them with problems they face. It will do so only if they see that you, as directors or managers who are flexible enough to listen and to consider what they say.

Some types of suggestions that you might hear are the following:

* Changes in the way of compensation, for more money and less costs taxable revenue
* Changes in working hours, less travel, more work at home, more carpooling or using public transport
* Flex hours
* Targeted technical assistance, such as assistance in obtaining loans, tips for part time jobs, help in finding needed health insurance or other types of insurance, reconfiguration of the benefits package your company
* Surprises. The longer a leader listens, the more likely it is that someone will make a proposal that is truly amazing, and almost always very good.

Flexibility includes the acceptance of the reality that there is no one size fits all, that when it comes to employee assistance and employee suggestions on changes that would help with their problems. Flexibility also includes the principle that if I do, what does not, I will always return to the same results.

Necessity is the mother of change, but it can only happen when there is an atmosphere of flexibility. Suppose you make changes to the hand, before he grabs you by the throat.
