We use them all the time, but most of us do not know the history of these useful items to our desks. Did you know that the mother of the ex-Monkees Micky Dolenz was the inventor of Liquid Paper? Read More Learn more about the fascinating history of some of the other favorite office supplies.

The stacker

The earliest known stapler was in the eighteenth century France, at the request of King Louis XV. The name of the genius, the production of these useful for the paper stick together was not recorded, but we know that each clip has been crafted (from gold, according to some sources), and imprinted with the royal insignia.

The stapler is one of those modest but very useful inventions, that most of us take for granted. It again won the respect, if in 2001, a now classic series of "The Office" "Top-ja-spoilsport Assistant Manager Gareth Keenan's stapler in a bowl of gelatin. As of 2007," "Jell-O forklift" revealed 1310 Google hits.

The clip

The cell phone - if sometimes easy to spill - device was developed by Samuel B. Fay, a U.S. citizen in 1867. But the wire clip, which are still widespread, was patented in 1890 by the British Gem Manufacturing. In a classic example of the "genericized mark," "the word" Gem "is now in Swedish to describe" each clip. "

A rival story claims that Herbert Spencer, the Victorian polymath that the term "Survival of the fittest," "strongly Darwin, and almost has to novelist George Eliot's husband (he turned her down), also has the invention of paperclip to his credit. However, there is little evidence for this story.

The Office

Based on the Latin word "Officium", "which meant not only the duty of (an important concept for the bureaucratic, not-fun Romans), but also a formal position as Magistrature.

The invention of the modern cabin, meanwhile, such a wry stories with which the history of technology is widespread. (TV was originally designed as an educational institution, for example.) Colorado designer Robert Propst, for Herman Miller, Inc., developed the cabin as part of a 1965 "Action Office" prototype. It appears that Provost was to enliven the workplace design.

The mouse

Stanford designer Douglas Engelbart, the first mouse in 1963. Engelbart, the mouse was not the slender plastic device that we know today, there are two large gear-wheels, which could (slowly) to move up or down. Today's ball mouse came a few years later - in 1972, when Engelbart colleague Bill English chucked from these two gear wheels and replaces them with a single bullet, able to intervene in any direction (and not just after above and below).

The filing cabinet

African-American inventor Henry Brown patented a fire-safe metal forged "receptacle for the storage and preservation of documents" "" "The ancestors of today's filing cabinet" in November 1886. The "vertical file" "We all know and love to twelve years to wait until Edwin Seibels, an insurance-based office staff, then the space-saving idea depends files. (Before that important business papers were often folded into envelopes and Pigeon holes.)

The utility knife

The original X-Acto knife - a forerunner of today's box-cutter - was designed by Polish immigrants Sundel Doniger, but we would never know if his brother-in-law, a father of Daniel Gluck U.S. Poet Laureate Louise Gluck hadn 't that hobbyists can thin metal blade useful. (Doniger had hoped to market surgeons!)

We do not know exactly who invented the safety knife or box cutter, but it is again today as an invention of the Klever Kutter has been on "Good Morning America" and Gizmodo.com. The Klever Kutter is so sure that it is admitted for air transport by the Homeland Security. It makes short work of clamshell packaging, but there is no danger to the user.

SafeCutters distributes the Klever Kutter and Klever Koncept, two of the safest tool blades are available. Klever Kutter virtually eliminates the risk of workplace injuries, while the permanently shielded blade protects packaged products. It was established by the Department of Homeland Security for safe air travel.
